| 内容記述 | A central problem in interpreting Troilus and Cressida has been its unusual dramatic structure, which makes it difficult for us to give to it a generic label such as comedy or tragedy of “comical satyre”. This structure, despite its seeming disorderliness, preserves its dramatic unity by means of various kinds of inconsistencies found in the actions of the characters, as well as in the characters themselves. The duality which is often pointed out in Troilus can also be found in many of the other characters. The inner cleavage in each character, along with the sequence of inconclusive, frustrating actions, represents the precarious consistency of human conduct and the helplessness of an individual when put within the mechanism of the cruel real world. This play, unlike Shakespeare’s other plays, does not present us with any leading character through whose action we may interpret and experience its dramatic world. Thus, as is typically shown in Troilus’ disillusionment scene (5.2), the audience’s attention is not focused and it is not allowed the stable viewpoint otherwise provided by a particular character on stage, making for subtle and complicated responses to the action. This dramatic structure is unique, and the so far ignored enormous dramatic potentialities resulting from it form an unfailing source of interest on the present-day stage. | |||||
