| 内容記述 | The number of foreign students who come to Japan steadily increased after the launch of the “hundred Thousand Foreign Students Program”. But it peaked in 1995. Now it is time to reconsider the question of where they go to study? The paper examines the long term trends of Asian students who have studied abroad for the last thirty-five years. The major findings of the paper are; (1) the ratio of the number of foreign students who study in Japan to the total number of students who study abroad (the ratio is referred to as the “Preference Rate for Japan”, or PRJ in short) varies very much, depending on the country of origin of the students. PRJ has been as high as 20% for East Asian students, and 4% for ASEAN students, and as low as1.5% for South Asian students. (2) Although PRJ has steadily increased during last twenty years for all sections of Asia, PRJ is considered as quite low when compared with other students absorbing countries. Australia, which population is only one fifth of Japan, is attracting more than four times of ASEAN students, for example. (3) Majority of Asian students is studying in the USA, and the preference rate to the USA is increasing even recent years, notwithstanding the historical ties with former colonial powers. (4) Exceptional trend is observed only in Middle East Moslem country students, 35% of those students choose European countries for study, 25% choose other Moslem countries, 22% chose former Soviet bloc countries, and the USA appears as their forth choice. The paper gives case studies for selected Asian countries; China, Vietnam and Malaysia. Though these three countries have different historical backgrounds, similar patterns are observed in their change of preference on the country for study. | |||||
